Diaper CARE!
One of the most important things about cloth diapering is maintaining proper care of your baby's diaper stash. If not, this can cause many issues from leaky diapers, lingering smells and even re-occurring rashes. Diaper Care is very simple!
-
Use ONLY additive free detergents. This means detergents free from oils, perfumes, dyes, softeners. One of our favorites is Charlie's Soap.
-
Use only ½ the normal amount of detergent
-
Always use largest wash setting to allow for thorough cleaning
-
No Bleach, Fabric Softeners or Dryer Sheets
-
No Diaper Rash Ointments without using a liner
This is our regular wash routine:
We use a dry pail, meaning our diapers aren't soaking. We rinse soiled diapers and place them in the pail. On wash day we do the following:
-
Cold Rinse Cycle with a tablespoon of baking soda for freshness
-
Hot Wash Cycle with preferred detergent (we will occasionally add a small amount of Oxy-Clean if needed, due to illness or needed freshening)
-
Cold Rinse Cycle
-
Hang or Machine Dry on low – We LOVE to hang our diapers outside to dry when possible, and this offers a natural sun bleaching as well as, naturally freshens them.
EASY, EASY, EASY!!!
Now, IF something (or someone!) accidentally does slip up and require your diapers need a little extra TLC, here's what to do:
Test your diapers for repelling. You can do this by running a small amount of water on the inside of the diaper. If the water doesn't absorb or wick through to the absorbent insert, they may need to be stripped.
To Strip your diapers of residues effecting their functionality, we suggest scrubbing them with a grease fighting dish soap like Dawn. Then wash them through your machine several times, without any added detergents, on the largest/hottest load setting. You can include a small amount of Oxy-Clean in one of the wash cycles. Re-test them and repeat as needed.
