Diaper Lingo - The ABCs Explained!

Ever wonder what a 'prefold' or an "AIO" is? Use this handy list of diaper lingo to help uncover the mystery.

ZooNique Baby Cloth Diapers - Unique front opening diaper that allows you to “stuff” with inserts based on absorbency desire. Waterproof diapers requiring no cover. The most creative and unique cloth diaper available! :)

Pockets - Similar idea to our ZooNique Baby Cloth Diaper. Waterproof diapers with a rear opening for insert stuffing. A very practical and popular choice for cloth diapering mom’s today.

All-In- One(AIO) - Ready to use waterproof diaper with the absorbent insert material sewn in for quick and easy changes.

Fitteds - A super absorbent anytime diaper. Requires a waterproof cover.

Contours - Somewhere between a fitted and a prefold. These diapers work great for newborns and help expand your stash economically. Requires a waterproof cover.

Prefolds - The basic “get the job done” diaper! These may take a little more practice to get used to, but are a super absorbent, economical cloth diapering option. Also make great folded inserts and burp clothes. Requires a waterproof cover.

Covers - Waterproof barrier for use with fitteds, contours, prefolds and other non-waterproof diapers. Covers can be made of wool, water resistant fleece or PUL to name a few.

Inserts - Main absorbent material for your diapers. Inserts can be made of many different thirsty fabrics like microfiber terry, flannel, bamboo and hemp.

Doublers - Added absorbency without added bulk. These trim additions can be paired with an insert or laid inside a diaper for a little extra protection for nap/bedtime or heavy wetting babies.

Liners - Reusable or flushable, liners are designed to prevent staining of your diapers and assist in easier cleaning. Silk liners can also be healing for irritated skin.

Fasteners - For diapers that don’t have snaps or hook and loop closures, fasteners may be helpful. These can be the traditional diaper pins we remember our mom’s and grandma’s using or nifty little gadgets like the Snappi.

Other Accessories - These are things that can help make the cloth diapering experience easier. Items include helpful tools like diaper pails, pail liners, deodorizers, travel bags, wipes, and many, many more! Check out our Accessories for examples.

Diaper Fabrics

PUL - Polyester Urethane Laminate/Cotton Urethane Laminate
These laminated fabrics are often used on the outside of diapers as a waterproof barrier. This will be the outer fabric on most ZooNique Baby Diapers, Pockets, All-In-Ones and Covers.

Microfleece/Fleece - There are many different types and weights of fleece. Some can serve as a stay dry liner on the inside of diapers, allowing moisture to wick away to the absorbent layer or insert. Others are water-resistant and can be used for outer covers.

Flannel - An absorbent cotton material that comes in lots of fun colors and prints.

Bamboo - A natural and renewable high quality fabric that is both luxuriously soft and super absorbent.

Hemp - Hemp is a wonderful, renewable, naturally absorbent and anti-microbial fiber, making it a perfect option for cloth diapers.

Terry - This can be microfiber-terry, French-terry or Sherpa to name a few, but all are used primarily for their absorbent qualities.
